Retrospective Cohort study for the patients with Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain is one of the most common causes of physician visit in nowadays and because of this, numerous studies have focused on its diagnosis and management. Among them, MRI plays important and useful diagnostic tool for Physicians and patients.

Purpose of study

The objective of this study is to describe spine pathology likely common in Myanmar . In addition, we want to highlight the role and effectiveness of MRI in Spine Study.

Materials and Methods

Lumbar Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) of 407cases who suffered from Low Back Pain were diagnosed at Imaging Department, Parami Hospital for further investigation. Cases were collected between May,2015 and March,2017.Patients were chosen between the age group of 20 to 60 years with no operative history on lumbar region. Age, Gender and BMI were recorded. Four Radiologists from Parami Hospital evaluated the diagnostic information for these patients.

Among 407 cases,218 are male patients and189 are female patients and mean BMI is 28 kg/m²(26kg/m²- 31 kg/m²). BMIs were classified as low; from 0-18.5 kg/m², normal ;between 18.5-24.9  kg/m², overweight ;between 25-29.9 kg/m² and obese higher than 30 kg/m². In MR assessment of Lumbar spine study, 19 case were found as Normal, 376cases were reported asDisc Diseases and the other12 cases were evaluated as incidental findings such as Hydronephrosis, Polycystic kidney,Ovarian Cysts, Lower Pelvis mass and Posterior Epidural Defect in lower thoracic region.

According to our case study, we found out that Degenerative Disc Diseases are most common in male patients (BMI of  28 kg/m²) with no athletic bodies and lead to Class I Obese. Thus, Sport and daily exercise are essential to control BMI within normal range and we would like toextend further case studies for different spine regions in the future.
